Prof. Tole Sutikno Explained Future Electric Transportation Technology Based on Vector Control and Artificial Intelligence on his inaugural speech as professor

Monday December 4th 2023, Prof. Tole Sutikno (ESPERG LEADER) confirmed as professor at UNIVERSITAS AHMAD DAHLAN YOGYAKARTA in the field of electronics, instrumentation and control engineering.

In his speech, Prof. Tole conveyed the importance of adopting electric vehicles for smarter and environmentally friendly cities in the future. On the other hand, the development of future electric vehicles based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a big opportunity and challenge for researchers. The important role of AI in Electric vehicles includes: (1) Increasing Vehicle Efficiency, (2) Autonomous Driving, (3) Predictive Maintenance, (4) Charging Infrastructure Optimization, (5) Battery Technology and Energy Management, (6) User Experience, (7) Electric Motor Drive Improvement, etc.

The focus area studied by Prof. Tole is electric motor drive improvement. Direct Torque Control (DTC) is a research topic carried out by Prof. Tole since his Doctoral Studies at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). In his inaugural speech, Prof. Tole explained that electric motor drive improvement can be done by utilizing AI which aims to optimize the DTC technique. Fuzzy Logic based DTC, ANN based DTC, Genetic Algorithm based DTC and Particle Swarm Optimization based DTC, are techniques used to improve AI-based Electric Motor Drives.

Prof. Tole Sutikno Explained Future Electric Transportation Technology Based on Vector Control and Artificial Intelligence on his inaugural speech as professor

In this inauguration speech, future electric vehicle transportation technology based on DTC vector control and AI was presented as a clean, safe and intelligent transportation mode solution. The presentation starts with the main components that make up an electric car, and is explained one by one, mainly related to direct torque control, power electronic converters (DC-DC and DC-AC), batteries and their management, as well as the application of AI in electric vehicles. Vector control with DTC is becoming increasingly important in the development of electric vehicles because it can improve safety, efficiency and performance. In the final section, four AI-based DTC control topologies, namely: fuzzy logic, neural-network, genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization have been presented. Future electric vehicle transportation technology based on DTC and AI offers better performance improvements compared to conventional approaches (without AI), especially regarding torque dynamic response, current THD, motor parameter sensitivity, and dynamic conditions at low speed (dynamic at low speed). However, the application of AI increases complexity and computing time. It is difficult to conclude which solution is the best to improve DTC performance (in all aspects). The choice of method depends on cost, hardware availability, system reliability and accuracy. This manuscript is expected to provide motivation and a useful reference for all industrial practitioners and researchers working in the field of future electric transportation technology.
